瑞典Mercodia是第一家、也是唯一一家成功開發(fā)氧化型LDL (oxidized LDL) ELISA診斷試劑盒的生產(chǎn)商。氧化型LDL是血管動(dòng)脈硬化癥的獨(dú)特標(biāo)志物。目前世界心血管疾病研究成果認(rèn)為：脂蛋白的氧化是動(dòng)脈硬化早期的重要環(huán)節(jié)，而氧化型LDL在加速動(dòng)脈硬化方面起多種關(guān)鍵作用。
冠心病人往往其血液氧化型LDL水平很高，這表明動(dòng)脈管壁上粥樣硬化開始形成。而且越來越多的證據(jù)表明氧化型LDL水平與動(dòng)脈硬化和冠心病形成相關(guān)，現(xiàn)在氧化型LDL水平也逐漸成為一種診斷依據(jù)，以便給冠心病病人提供更好更及時(shí)的治療。 
　　現(xiàn)在廣泛認(rèn)為動(dòng)脈硬化是一種慢性炎癥，而非原來認(rèn)為的退行性疾病。而氧化型LDL應(yīng)該是造成冠狀動(dòng)脈管壁粥樣硬化的一種關(guān)鍵蛋白因子。正常動(dòng)脈不含氧化性LDL，而天然型（非氧化型）LDL也不會(huì)導(dǎo)致動(dòng)脈硬化。因此LDL的氧化是以下病理過程的關(guān)鍵：初期，單核巨噬細(xì)胞轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)榕菽?xì)胞；后期，冠狀動(dòng)脈狹窄、纖維斑塊形成、血栓形成、心肌梗塞。
循環(huán)系統(tǒng)的禍患
　　Mercodia的氧化性LDL ELISA試劑盒采用一種獨(dú)特單克隆抗體。此抗體由比利時(shí)Leuven大學(xué)Paul Holvoet和Desire Collen教授研發(fā)，對(duì)氧化型LDL有很高的特異性。實(shí)驗(yàn)證明，氧化性LDL和冠心病的關(guān)聯(lián)性比其他血液脂類、如總膽固醇、HDL-膽固醇或LDL膽固醇更高。Holvoet教授將和Mercodia一起，不斷改進(jìn)其檢測(cè)方法。

與糖尿病的關(guān)系
　　動(dòng)脈粥樣硬化和冠心病是二型糖尿病主要死因。Mercodia發(fā)現(xiàn)，高氧化型LDL癥候患者中，二型糖尿病患者占多數(shù)。這一重大發(fā)現(xiàn)預(yù)示著氧化型LDL的檢測(cè)可成為鑒定（已產(chǎn)生動(dòng)脈硬化癥候的）二型糖尿病的有效指標(biāo)。
